About Saint George's Orthodox Association in Ramla

A century of faith, education, and community service in the heart of Ramla.

Our Mission

Saint George's Orthodox Association in Ramla is a registered charity. Its members consist of the Greek Orthodox community in Ramla (who form the general assembly), and it represents them and provides services in social, educational, cultural, religious, and scouting matters.

The association is managed by an administrative body of twelve members, elected every three years.

We are committed to preserving our identity, belonging, and cultural and social distinction, and to living together in a multicultural environment while building bridges of understanding and cooperation.

Community Representation

We represent the local Orthodox community of about 2,500 people. We provide educational, cultural, and social services that meet the needs of our diverse community.

Successive administrations of the association provide assistance to needy members of the community, offer scholarships to students, greet community members on holidays, visit the sick, and work on maintaining the cemetery.

It also operates and manages the Orthodox school at all its stages, sponsors the Sunday school and the Orthodox Scout troop, and often represents the community before municipal and government departments.

Ramla is a coastal city built by Arabs 1400 years ago, located on the ancient road between Jaffa and Jerusalem. Today, Ramla is a mixed city of Jews, who form the majority, and Arabs, who make up a quarter of its population. The population of Ramla today is about 85,000, including 4,000 Christians (Orthodox, Latins, Greek Catholics, Protestants, and some Armenians).

Educational Excellence

The Orthodox educational system in Ramla is a recognized, non-official institution serving Christian and Muslim students and children from the age of one to the twelfth grade from the Ramla and Lod area. It is spread across several buildings and is considered one of the finest schools in Ramla and the region, achieving high success rates in the high school matriculation exams (Matric/Bagrut), reaching 100% in the last two years.

A Democratic Association

The association's management operates with complete transparency and principles of good governance.

Democratic according to the association's law, ensuring community representation and accountability in all our endeavors.

Association Institutions

The general assembly of the association, composed of member community members, elects an administrative body of twelve members (three of whom are women) every three years. They voluntarily manage the community's affairs and the association's institutions without compensation, dedicating their time and service to preserving the association's gains and its development and prosperity.

Audit Committee

The association has an external auditor (accountant) and an elected audit committee from the general assembly who work independently to ensure financial transparency and compliance with the Associations Law of 1980.

Volunteer Service

The success of our association depends on the dedication of volunteers who contribute their time and skills to support our various programs and initiatives.

Current Challenges and Needs

While we celebrate our achievements, we face significant challenges, including financial ones and others related to our relationship with the Ministry of Education, which may affect the continuity of our vital services.

Financial Reality

The budget of the association with all its institutions reaches about 18 million shekels, its primary source being partial funding from the Ministry of Education, parent payments, donations from the community, and income from the rent of the association's building.

The rise in teachers' salaries and operating and maintenance costs, alongside a decrease in government funding, has led to a significant budget deficit that threatens our ability to maintain educational excellence.

How We Respond

Cost Management

Reducing teaching hours and maintenance expenses while maintaining the quality of education.

Fundraising

Launching a fundraising campaign from parents and community members and seeking donors and contributors from individuals and charitable organizations in the country and abroad.
